To future littles:

When going to college, remember not to over commit yourself. It's hard to balance a heavy course load with a lot of other activities. Decide what is important to you, and devote time to that. With that being said, however, allow yourself to take opportunities that arise. Allow yourself to explore new things and find out what you really enjoy. Let yourself develop into who you want to be.
Don't let your parents have too much control over your life. You are in college. You are an adult. You need to make decisions for yourself. While at times you should take your parents' opinions into consideration, you need to make your own decisions. If they want you to major in one thing but you want to major in something else, you need to make that decision. It is your life. In the end, you have to live with the choices you make, so make sure they're yours and not your parents'.
Talk everything out with your roommate in the beginning. Ask all of the awkward questions within the first week. It helps you avoid awkward situations later on. Discuss everything from how you feel about music playing in your room to what your sleeping schedule is like to how you feel about having boys in your dorm. Some conversations are a little uncomfortable, but it's better to get them out of the way in the beginning so you won't have misunderstandings in the future.
Allow yourself to meet people, even if you're an introvert. It's a lot nicer to have a lot of people you're friendly with. Also, give people a chance. Even if they remind you of people you know from high school that you don't like, give them a chance. They may surprise you. Also remember that everyone has reasons for the way that they act, and keep that in mind before you judge people.

  1. Grace,
I feel the same way as you do. When it's awkward at first it's easier the rest of the year. Also, Converse is helping me to stop judging people based on my first impressions, so I can identify with what you're saying.

  2. This is some wonderful advice, Grace. A lot of it has to do with just realizing that you're an adult now, doesn't it? It's your own life, and you have to be responsible for it and how you interact with others. Good work.

  3. Not letting your parents control you while you're here is awesome. SO glad that someone finally said it. I have so many friends that are worried about their parents finding out about their tattoos, or something else small that really is their decision. I actually had a friend call her mother yesterday to get her permission so she could peirce her nose. That kindof blows my mind that people still do that. Awesome post.

  4. Being in introvert is kind of rough. I'm really truly an introvert, but I like being around people. You really have to throw yourself out there, and make friends, and that is something I never had to do until I got to college. Your friends are no longer built it!

  5. Your advice for living with a roommate is really helpful. Me and my roommate did that in the very beginning, and it really has helped avoiding conflicts. It really starts your roommate relationship on the right foot. :-)

  6. I love your roommate advice. If you bottle up the emotions, it only makes it a lot worse. Talking it out clears the air between you and her and gives some time to regrow and recoup. Nice post!
